Parshas Lech Lecha – So Just Love Them

Rabbi Mordy Anton   -

The Passuk in this week’s Parsha tells us that “Avraham took his wife Sarai and his brother’s son Lot, and all the wealth that they had amassed, and the persons that they had acquired in Haran; and they set out for the land of Canaan.”

Rashi, explaining who the Passuk refers to with “all the people that they acquired,” says it refers to those they brought to become servants of Hashem.

Rabbeinu Yonah, on the Passuk in Mishlei, “The generous man is blessed,” interprets it as referring to Avraham Avinu, who, out of his generosity and love for people, brought them under the wings of the Shechina.

Rav Hennach Leibowitz highlights a crucial idea from these Chazal: the key to success in harbatzas torah is a love for people and a desire to give. If students do not feel this love, they will reject what is taught.

Even if we aren’t formally in harbatzas torah, we each have family, friends, and neighbors to whom we impart lessons. For these relationships to succeed, they must be sourced in love.
