Honoring the Legacy of Meyer Berman: A WWII Hero Among Us
As we commemorate Memorial Day and honor those who have served our country, we would like to take a moment to remember and recognize the extraordinary bravery and dedication of Meyer “Mike” Berman, a true hero of World War II and a cherished member of our community.
Though Meyer is no longer with us, his legacy of valor and selflessness continues to inspire. Meyer Berman, a Private First Class in the 12th Infantry Regiment, exemplified exceptional heroism during his service. His courage and commitment earned him several distinguished honors, including the Bronze Star Medal with one Oak Leaf Cluster, the Good Conduct Medal, the World War II Victory Medal and Ribbon, and the European African Middle Eastern Campaign Medal with a Silver Service Star.
One of the most remarkable stories of Meyer’s service is his act of valor that saved the life of his friend, Private John Byers. Amidst a barrage of artillery shells, Meyer risked his own life to carry Private Byers to safety, ensuring he received the medical attention that ultimately saved his life. In a heartfelt letter from a hospital in England, Private Byers expressed his deep gratitude, acknowledging that he owed his life to Meyer’s bravery.
Meyer’s heroism did not go unnoticed. He was awarded three Bronze Star Medals for his acts of bravery. His citations highlight his unwavering dedication and exceptional courage under fire.
Additionally, Meyer’s contributions and sacrifices were recognized by Senator Daniel Patrick Moynihan in a tribute that acknowledged not only his wartime heroism but also his enduring impact on his community and country as an exemplary citizen who came from an immigrant family.
We are profoundly grateful for Meyer’s service. His story is a powerful reminder of the sacrifices made by so many to protect our freedoms and uphold the values we cherish.
Please join us in expressing our deepest gratitude and in honoring the memory of Meyer Berman for his extraordinary service and bravery
